Generation 10’s Commodity Manager Focuses on Supply Chain Optimization

Generation 10 Ltd. is a Liverpool-based software development company and vendor that offers a number of solutions including a CTRM solution called the G10 Commodity Manager. Established in 2000, its initial focus was on cotton trading originally with a Lotus Notes Domino-based platform. Through the last decade, the company was successful in attracting clients and projects in a number of commodity-related areas allowing it to build out a lot of additional functionality – largely in the soft commodities arena and with specific emphasis on supporting supply chain optimization. Over the last few years, it has also been busy migrating and enhancing this functionality using its technical and business expertise to create a more robust and modern web-based environment. The new product, the G10 Framework, provides a graphical user interface, excellence in handling data and allows for shorter implementations.

The G10 Commodity Manager provides a click and drill environment across the usual trade capture, logistics and invoicing world of soft commodities trading. However, its true differentiation appears to lie in its in-depth capabilities to optimize costs and timescales in the supply chain. G10 has been successful in modeling movement and quality data providing a highly flexible and configurable way allowing extremely detailed analysis of the ‘mechanics’ of the commodity supply chain. Utilizing graphical and drill-down reporting, users are armed to better manage the operational risks in that supply chain.

The company has also put a lot of thought into providing collaboration, workflow and visualization tools in the product that increase its ease of use and its potential business value to end users. It has been designed to help users proactively manage the business, reduce operational risks in the supply chain and, yes, eliminate spreadsheets. Currently, G10 has around 12-15 customers for the product in commodities like coffee, cocoa, sugar, soybeans and so on, but believes it can tackle other commodities in the future including energy and metals.

According to Richard Williamson of G10, the company doubled in size last year on the back of its success with the product and he believes the company’s differentiation is in its ability to handle the physical side of trading commodities. By delivering web-enabled software either on a SaaS or traditional en premise basis, with a clean, modern interface, strong data interrogation tools and real workflow, G10 believes it can deliver beyond the traditional CTRM solution. By combining this with an agile delivery methodology, G10 is also able to customize and configure rapidly, reducing the total cost of ownership as well. This may well prove to be a key selling point for G10 as the agri-commodities sector of the CTRM landscape is quite crowded and very competitive but one that we feel will be an area of better than average growth in the future.
