Amphora Industry Research Shows Key Trends for Independent Oil & Gas Firms

Amphora, these days headquartered in London and ran by CEO, Chris Mudry, has just put out a very interesting white paper. Usually, ComTech would not be in the business of promoting a vendor’s white paper but this one is a bit different. Ivan O’Toole, Head of Sales & Marketing briefed me on the results a couple of weeks ago. Based on in-depth interviews with over 50 upstream and related companies outside of the oil majors, the research reveals some major trends. “The majors are actually only 10% of the market,” Ivan told me, “and so we wanted to talk to oil & gas companies around the world – national oil companies, regional players and independents.”

Titled “Agenda 2030: Driving Continued Revenues in Global Hydrocarbons”, the study reveals the trends among the majority of upstream business – the ones that have 88% of reserves, 85% of production and 90% of emissions, but whose views are often lost in the noise from the major oil companies – or as they are called these days – energy companies.  Ivan took me through a couple of interesting findings such as how financing models are changing. “The big banks have gotten more selective with activist investor pressures, but it seems that there is a ready and perhaps even better source of finance emerging,” he said. “All the banks and the investors are managing to do is push the funding overseas and to help create more innovative funding models that are cheaper and more cost effective it seems.”

As analysts, the paper is in part a confirmation of our own analysis and yet adds to it in helping identify other trends complete with quotes from senior executives, just how oil and gas companies are looking to the future in order to sustain and grow their businesses against a backdrop of global change. With quotes like this one, “Ambar Gupta, Head of Risk, Gulf Petrochem Group, notes, “There are still plenty of parts in the world that are undeveloped. Until such time we reach parity, the demand for fossil fuels is not going anywhere.” There is much to be learned from Amphora’s study.
