The Evolution of Talent in Commodities

Talent is the key to a thriving commodities world and especially to the vendors that play within the industry. Periodically, I like to check in with headhunters to get a read of the talent market as a trailing indicator of which vendors are truly succeeding and which are not and have often discussed these trends with Carl Vellenoweth, CEO of Commoditas, for example. Recently, Carl contacted me about a wider piece of work he had been doing mapping out commodities talent trends in some considerable detail and coming to some very interesting conclusions. That article will shortly be published here on CTRM Center meanwhile, here are a number of things I learned to whet your appetite.

Commoditas says that while CTRM software has grown at strong rates, talent hasn’t. Talent, it says has lagged the growth in CTRM by over 100% this last five years forcing CTRM vendors and consulting firms to reinvent their recruitment processes. Commoditas looks at the various vendors in the space and how they have recruited as well as what hiring strategies they appear to have adopted to keep pace. These are interesting data as they do add evidence from our analyst perspective to who is growing and thriving and who is not.

Commoditas also gets into where the talent is located and there is no surprise that India plays an important role these days in sourcing talent and when it comes to India, Commoditas has a break down of where in India that talent is located and a view on how talent in certain locations is evolving strategically and directionally. It’s fascinating stuff. The article goes on to look at the future of CTRM talent and looks at agile recruitment models as a way to ensure that companies can grow and thrive.

The broader commodities industry is facing the same challenges. How to find and mature talent as many retire and exit the industry. The industry has changed massively meaning that the skills that are sought today are likely to be somewhat different to those looked for in the past. These days technology skills and an ability to get beyond siloes and look at the business through risk tinted glasses may be the future. It’s a massive challenge and one that ComTech will be looking increasingly closely at.

Commoditas, Carl told me, is these days is branding itself as providing E/CTRM Workforce Management Solutions as opposed to recruitment services to better frame itself against what it sees as an evolving and morphing talent market. “This shift reflects our focus on a closer partnership with clients to help acquire, manage, and advise on modern workforce solutions, rather than simply supplying individuals to mandates,” he said. “We’re working to move away from monolithic hiring processes and instead promote and implement modern approaches that accelerate workplace innovation.” Carl will also be providing CTRMCenter with monthly contributions going forward….
