Energy One Sees Technology as a Key to its Future Success

Damien Tampé is Energy One’s Global CTO and someone I had not met until last week. Keen to learn where Energy One was going with technology, I had a call with Paris-based Damien to discuss his role and tech at the vendor. His role means that different country heads of technology all report into him, and he also manages global corporate IT functions, development operations and support operations. Basically, he makes sure the team works together across cultural and national boundaries. “For me, things like simplifying, standards, good practice and having an agile mindset are key to our success,” he told me.

We discussed several areas where he is involved including data where he said that his role is to “ensure it uses the best tools and attracts and develops skills around them and areas like AI and machine learning.”  Ensuring that the right skills are utilized globally is also key.

Essentially, Energy One has many solutions that are targeted at local markets. In fact, as Damien explained, it will always be that way as it wants to serve its customers and be close to them in the different locations that it operates in, and they have different needs. However, it will develop common modules that each product can utilize where feasible such as user authentication, he said. “We will use common modules where feasible and common business practices like standards,” he told me. “We need to make sure that we have scalable and reliable infrastructure, and that we leverage the cloud worldwide.”

He is also continually working on getting the right tools and to improve processes within the support side, he said.  Energy One provides outsourced operational services on a 24 by 7 basis and so it is key that information is easily shared by the team that is in various offices around the globe.

Another area is AI and Machine Learning. “We look to see how AI can help us be more efficient internally like using it to help write code efficiently,” he said. “On the other side, the business is complex, and AI can enable search, synthesis, and so on across a lot of documentation and data. There is often a huge amount of historical data as well and we can use this to help customers optimize or simulate their businesses.” So, he is bullish on AI in these two areas of the business suggesting that in the future, the Energy One systems will advise users on what to do and help to simplify their lives.  AI and ML is also used withing the algo trading applications and so it is a key part of his role.

Energy One has been adding a layer of experienced senior staff across the business as well as growing generally seeing itself as a one-stop shop. IT and technology are key to its success and Damien is driving efficiency and innovation in those areas for the vendor.
