What Happened to Commodities News?

If you are a frequent visitor to CTRMCenter then you will know that we like to post a daily article of our own in the blog section and a news story in the new section.

A decade or so ago, getting a news story was pretty easy – you found something that seemed relevant and of general interest to our theme and cut and pasted it here along with the source of the content. Back then, the internet was quite the wild west and no one really minded you reposting their copy if the source was acknowledged and included – it was extra links for them and brought traffic. But over that time, things have changed. People get annoyed if you repost their content so it has gotten harder and harder to source good new stories in the commodities space. In fact, the only outlet that allowed it – subject to certain rules that we always followed – was Reuters – and that is where we source most news from in our news section.

However, over the last few years, Reuters has become overtly political. It no longer seems to write a wide range of news stories about supply and demand in commodities. Instead, it appears to wrote stories promoting certain narratives and political ideologies as in it promotes net zero, climate change, and all of those other modern mantras. Of course, they have the right to do that. But for us looking to provide good fundamentals news content it has gotten harder and harder to find anything of value on their site. We seek proper fundamentals type analysis of trends in and around commodities. They appear to publish weather stories mainly. On any particular day, it has gotten harder and harder to find anything meaningful or insightful to post here in the news section as a result.

I think this is a shame as most of us in commodity trading and risk look for fundamental data. Of course, these days, geopolitics plays a large role as well but as analysts, we’d like to get balance there as well. Fortunately, that news outlet still does have one or two commodities-focused analytical journalists who have remained faithful to journalism and who do write stories about fundamentals. But they are fewer than in previous years.

Where do you get fundamental commodities news these days? Are you finding it hard to actually get news that you can use as opposed to narrative and propaganda dressed up as commodities news?

Of course, we can also post press announcements in our news section and routinely do so. So, if you have press announcements that you think would suit our site – please ensure we are are on your mailing list.
